Every Walk Counts: 500 Miles for Cancer Research

Every Walk Counts: 500 Miles for Cancer Research

If you follow us on our socials, you may already know that this April, the Bath Country Pets team decided to make our daily dog walks even more meaningful. Together, we set ourselves a heartfelt challenge: to walk 500 miles throughout the month to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer — a cause that is incredibly close to all of our hearts.

We’re now halfway through the challenge and want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported, donated, or cheered us on so far. The encouragement we’ve received has truly lifted our spirits, and we’re more determined than ever to complete every step — with our four-legged friends walking loyally by our sides.

Cancer has affected so many lives, whether through family members, close friends, or even beloved pets. This challenge gave each of us the opportunity to reflect, and we wanted to share the personal reasons behind why we’re walking…

Emma’s Reason

I lost my Dad to cancer, and it changed my perspective overnight. He was the cleanest-living person you could imagine — he did all the right things, exercised regularly, ate well, never smoked — yet this indiscriminate disease took him from us.

He was an awe-inspiring and brave man, and his loss devastated our family. Even years later, it remains a very painful memory. But his strength gives me the inspiration to live each day to the fullest, to value health and family above all else, and to never take time for granted.

Lulah’s Reason

The first time I ever heard the word “cancer,” I was in Year 2. My best friend’s mum, who was always a source of warmth, laughter, and comfort, passed away — and though I didn’t fully understand it at the time, I remember hoping something like that would never happen to someone in my own family.

But cancer is one of those things that seems to circle around you until, one day, it finds its way to your door. Over the years, it has hit far too close to home — losing my grandad a few years ago, and now watching my nanna fight her own battle.

This walk isn’t just about raising money. It’s about showing up — for those we’ve lost, for those still fighting, and for the hope that one day, no one else will have to face this kind of journey.

And there’s truly nobody I’d rather be walking it with than my incredible BCP family — your support, strength, and spirit make every step more meaningful.

Rhiannon’s Reason

Sadly, cancer has affected many people in my life — both friends and relatives. While I’ve been lucky enough to see some of them recover, I’ve also had to witness others lose their battles.

For me, the most difficult time was during university when my mum was diagnosed. Hearing those words was terrifying, but with treatment, support, and endless strength, she pulled through and has now been given the all clear.

I’m walking for her — and for everyone else who’s had to witness someone they love go through this. I hope that through raising money for this incredible charity, fewer people will have to face these experiences in the future.

Mae & Marci’s Reason

Our grandfather Bill has had his own cancer journey — one that’s often been very private. He always put on a brave face, but we know he’s faced his fair share of worry, dread, and painful treatments. His strength and quiet resilience have been incredibly inspiring to our family.

Although he remains on medication, we’re so grateful to still have him with us. We are walking for him — and for everyone enduring a similar journey with quiet courage, even when it’s not always visible to others.

Every Step Matters

This challenge has brought us even closer together as a team, reminding us that every walk, every step, every mile — truly does count.
